La vie en rose. That is how Diego Maraotter lives.

The strands of Edith Piaf's great hit could be heard coming from our leading Football World Cup pundit's enclosure early today as France overcame Nigeria.

''In endless nights of love; a great delight that comes about; the pains and bothers are banished; Happy, happy to die of love,'' Maraotter sang.

His wag rested nearby, dewy-eyed. Who can blame her? What a romantic.

He leads football writers Sam Worthington and Tony Smith 9-7 in our picks competition but one gets the feeling it all might be going to his head.

''I love winning. I love football. Success is love. I love, love. I am love.''

Right then.

Maraotter briefly broke his trip to loveland to pick the USA to beat Belgium tomorrow morning.

''They are a team of lovers. They love free love, certainly more so than the Belgians who can barely form a government.''

Worthington, eyes rolling, said with Will Ferrell cheering the USA on anything was possible.

''The Americans are riding a wave of positivity and the favourites tag will weigh heavily on the talented but inexperienced Belgians.''

But Smith thinks the talented Belgians can cope with the pressure and is tipping them to triumph 2-0 in Salvador.
