It's over for our furry football friend, Diego Maraotter.

The leader of our World Cup picks competition heading into the knockout stages, Maraotter has failed to pick a winner since and trails writers Tony Smith and Sam Worthington 11-9 and 10-9 respectively.

With just tomorrow's final left and all three stumping for Germany to win, he has acknowledged the completeness of his defeat.

"I am humbled and prostrate myself before the humans. They were terrible in the initial rounds but clearly learnt from their many mistakes.

"I was drunk on my success and you don't learn a lot from winning all the time."

Maraotter said Smith and Worthington turned out to be very worthy opponents.

"Smith brought years and years of knowledge and guile to the table and Sam's youthful desire clearly drove him on... luck, obviously, also played a part.

"I am feeling a bit lost about it all."
