Winston Reid's future remains with West Ham after English Premier League giants Arsenal failed to chase the All Whites defender across the line on the final day of European football's summer transfer window today.

Speculation has been rife all year of Reid being wooed by the Gunners to fill a void in their defensive department. That continued through the early period of a day dubbed "Manic Monday" as players moved around rich European clubs in last-minute deals.

Reid was certainly on Arsenal's radar during the day along with Ron Vlaar, Matija Nastasic and Celtic Dutch under-21 defensive star Virgil van Dijk.

But when the dust settled Reid found himself still at West Ham.

Arsenal's big signing was to bolster their forward line with a £16 million deal for Danny Welbeck from Manchester United.

There were some anxious moments for Chris Wood, New Zealand's other EPL player who wears Leicester City colours.

There had been plenty of preseason talk about Leicester offloading the All Whites striker, possibility down to the next division.

That increased today when Leicester were in a battle for the services of Jermain Defoe, Toronto FC's English striker whose place in the MLS was questioned following yesterday's sacking of his coach, former All Whites star Ryan Nelsen.

But Toronto rejected several bids for Defoe, easing pressure on Wood.

The theory doing the rounds today was that if Defoe were to move to Leicester it would mean five strikers at the club, with Wood the odd one out.

That saw Crystal Palace start sniffing around Wood today though nothing seemed to eventuate there.

Wood will still have a bit of heat on him though. Leicester did sign young Manchester United striker Tom Lawrence.

Wood was on the bench for Leicester's 1-1 draw with Arsenal yesterday.
