As yellow fever heads across the Tasman to fight for A-league glory, the Wellington Phoenix have honoured the man who led them there.

The Wellington Phoenix fly to Sydney this afternoon for Saturday's preliminary final against the Sydney FC at the Sydney Football Stadium.

But last night the focus was on the players as they celebrated their successful season with the Wellington Phoenix football awards.

The top gong went to captain Andrew Durante, who was named Player of the Year.

His win stopped striker Paul Ifill taking a clean sweep as he won the four of the evening's awards – players' player of the year, media player of the year, members' player of the year, and golden boot for his 12 regular-season goals.

The top award was voted for by coaches Ricki Herbert, Luciano Trani and Jonathan Gould, chief executive Tony Pignata, and football manager Mal Impiombato.

After each game they would each award points to the top players. Durante's 114 season points was followed by midfielder Vince Lia on 107, with Ifill third and defender Jon McKain fourth.

Herbert said while Ifill's scoring ability was obvious, Durante's defence had won the day.

"Scoring goals up one end is great but counts for nothing if you can't keep the opposition out at the other end."

But Ifill's contribution was huge, he said. "I have no doubt he's the best striker in the league."

Troy Hearfield was voted under-23 player of the year.

Saturday's preliminary final comes after the Phoenix won two home games in overtime to seal their position. The winner will meet Melbourne in the final the following Saturday.
