Strong finish convinces McKain to sign again

Jon McKain says the Phoenix's stellar end-of-season finals run was a crucial factor in his decision to re-sign with the club for two more seasons.

The 27-year-old Australian international, who attracted interest from at least six other A-League clubs, yesterday committed to the Phoenix, who had identified securing his signature as their top priority after last Saturday's season-ending loss in Sydney.

McKain's partnership with fellow Socceroo Andrew Durante in the heart of the defence had been a feature of the Phoenix's mid-late season surge.

"I know it took a while to get things over the line but it wasn't a stalling tactic at all, there were a lot of factors to consider on top of football, including the fact I have a young family," McKain said.

"But as a team we had a great second half of the season and that ultimately convinced me to stay ... I'm happy to remain at the club and push for bigger things next season."

McKain's signing brings the number of current Phoenix players who will be at the club next season to 16.

"The group of players we have here is fantastic, you won't find a better bunch," McKain said.

"We've re-signed the core of the guys ... so now the club can go out there and recruit some more players who can push the pedal a bit."

As expected, though, the news was not good for Australian midfielder Michael Ferrante and All Whites utility David Mulligan, who were both officially cut yesterday.

Ferrante, a foundation Phoenix player, made 37 appearances during the first two seasons but was barely a factor this season, with six appearances, while Mulligan played just three times for the Phoenix in his two years – all at the start of last season.

He had not made the match-day squad for the past 46 matches and now faces a battle to keep himself in the frame for a spot in the All Whites' 23-man World Cup squad.

Meanwhile, it is understood the Phoenix are lukewarm about the prospects of re-signing striker Eugene Dadi and midfielder Adrian Caceres, and may even opt to test the market before pushing negotiations further.

Caceres was yesterday linked to a move to Adelaide United, although he may be keen to consolidate his career in Wellington, given he has already played for four A-League clubs in five years.
