Sydney FC fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief. It's now official: Alessandro Del Piero has signed for the Sky Blues.
The news will be formally confirmed tonight when Sydney FC chief executive Tony Pignata joins Del Piero in a press conference in Turin's decadent Principi Hotel to disclose the exact nature of the deal.
Sydney's interest in Del Piero was exclusively revealed in the Herald a week ago and the club went public that a deal had been agreed last Friday - only for all parties to cool on that talk over the weekend, insisting that there was still more work to be done before the contract was physically signed.
If the deal is as reported - a two-year deal with an option for a third year worth A$2m a year - Del Piero will become the biggest name to ever set foot in Australian club football and instantly becomes the highest-paid footballer to ever play in the A-League.
In a massive vote of confidence in the A-League, Del Piero has turned down Scottish giants Celtic, Swiss club Sion and, most notably, English powerhouses Liverpool - who made a desperate late play over the weekend - to sign with Sydney.
