Carlos Hernandez will miss the Wellington Phoenix's crucial A-League game against Melbourne Heart on Sunday with a calf injury.

The Costa Rican star was named in coach Ernie Merrick's preliminary squad yesterday but did not train at Newtown Park today.

Merrick said resting the playmaker was the sensible thing to do given he hadn't trained this week and was unable to reach his usual high standards in last Sunday's 1-1 draw against Perth Glory.

Belgian striker Stein Huysegems is set to take Hernandez's role, with Tyler Boyd joining Roy Krishna to form a pacy strike pairing.

Manny Muscat is set to return from suspension in place of midfielder Matthew Ridenton, with Shaun Timmins taking over from the injured Josh Brindell-South at left back.
