Ronaldo unimpressed with fat jibe from Michael Owen
Former England star Michael Owen has hurt Ronaldo with a fat jibe aimed directly at the Brazilian footballing great.
The two crossed paths as they were honoured at the Real Madrid club when current star Cristiano Ronaldo paraded his Fifa Ballon d'Or trophy.
"I thought I was putting the pounds on until I saw my old mate Ronnie!" Owen tweeted.
It hit a nerve with Ronaldo making a point at official proceedings, saying: "I am shocked as to how much importance my weight garners in the world we live in. I don't know why it is so important, to be honest."
Ronaldo got some support from his former Brazil team-mate Roberto Carlos.
"I don't like these type of jokes. Ronaldo is a very good friend of mine and we have to be careful. The thing about Ronaldo is not about his body, it's his heart, he has a very big heart," Carlos said in a Daily Mail report.
Both Owen and Ronaldo are former Ballon d'Or winners. The careers of the two striker crossed over at Real Madrid.
