Derry Ryan McBride was found dead at his home, just a day after leading his team to a 4-0 win.

Derry City soccer captain Ryan McBride has died, aged 27, the Irish Football Association has said.

The defender is thought to have died at home on Sunday evening (Monday New Zealand time), according to reports.

A cause of death is not yet known.

The Irish FA tweeted: "Thoughts tonight with the family of Ryan McBride and everyone involved with @derrycityfc".

Only a day earlier, McBride had led his team to a 4-0 victory over Drogheda United.

Drogheda United said on Twitter that they "would like to offer our deepest condolences to @derrycityfc on the sudden passing of their captain Ryan McBride".

 

Northern Ireland international Daniel Lafferty, a former teammate at Derry City, said he was "devastated" to hear the news
