As one of her idols won her first golfing major, Lydia Ko recorded her best US Open finish and her second best result in a major.

Ko shot a final round, one-under 69 at the difficult Pinehurst No 2 course this morning to get to seven-over for the tournament and a tie for 15th.

After an opening round six over 76, Ko was always going to struggle to push the leaders, but she consistently moved up the field with her pair of 71s over the weekend and her three-birdie, two bogey round today.

Ko was set for a top 10 finish after picking up shots on the ninth, 10th and 13th holes, but dropped shots on the 15th and 16th holes at Pinehurst.  Her idol Michelle Wie won the tournament, an even par 70 today helping her get to two-under.

She was the only player in the field to finish the event under par and won by two shots from World No 1 Stacy Lewis.

In her two previous US Opens, both played as an amateur, Ko finished tied for 39th (2012) and tied for 36th (2013).

In her eight previous majors, she had a best finish of second at last year’s Evian Championship while her next best was a tie for 17th at last year’s LPGA Championship.
