Golfer Phil Mickelson is an acknowledged master of the short game, known for his innovative work around the greens. 

But his trickery has reached a new level ahead of his defence of the British Open.

The 45-year-old American successfully played a flop shot back over his head in a practice round this week in the leadup to the Scottish Open.

Mickelson stunned watchers around the green when he set up his stance on a small rise with his back to the flag, opened the club face and sent the ball in an arc backwards to land close to the hole.
