Tiger Woods's popularity is in free fall amid reports of a seventh mistress and accusations the golfer's "vanity" has worsened his plight.

Holly Sampson, a 36-year-old porn star from Los Angeles, has been outed as the seventh woman to be linked romantically with Woods.

She joins the list of Mindy Lawton, Cindi Rist, Rachel Uchitel, Jaimee Grubbs, Kalika Moquin, and Jamie Jungers as those romantically linked to the world's No1 golfer.

Ms Sampson, star of movies including My First Sex Teacher and Flying Solo 2, said through a lawyer she had no comment to make on the matter, New York Daily News reported.

But the latest alleged dalliance will do little to improve the married father-of-two's image, which has taken a battering since his car accident last week.

A CNN/USA Today/Gallup telephone poll of 1041 adult Americans shows the 33-year-old's favourable rating has dropped 24 percent since June.

The result accompanies a number of stinging editorials accusing the golfer of supreme vanity and arrogance.

John Hopkins, golfing correspondent for Britain's The Times newspaper, said Woods was kidding himself if he believed his ambiguous online apology of last week was enough to keep the wolves at bay.

"He thought that if he lay low behind the barricades that surrounded the estate on which he lives and said nothing, the reporters would have to turn their cars around and head home," Hopkins wrote.

"He thought that if he kept silent the scrutiny would dwindle slowly until by the time he made his first tournament appearance of next year, he might be forgiven if not forgotten.

"How wrong can you be? He should have owned up immediately, made a public admission perhaps on television."

Accompanying the criticism is a poorly-timed appearance on the cover of Golf Digest, in which Woods poses with US President Barack Obama under the banner "10 tips Obama can take from Tiger".

''Woods is a good role model...because he has always been able to pull himself together after setbacks,'' the cover story notes.

"Woods never does anything that would make himself look ridiculous."

And attention is already turning to the weekend wedding of the golfer's childhood friend Bryon Bell, who allegedly helped arrange liaisons between Woods and mistress number one, Rachel Uchitel.

Woods is due to play best man to Mr Bell, his one-time caddie and now head of the golfer's course design company, although it is not known whether he still plans to make a speech.
