Michael Campbell will miss the cut at the US Open.

The New Zealander, who won the tournament in 2005, but has endured a barren run of form since, fired an improved, four-over par second round 74 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco this morning.

But on 13-over after 36 holes, Campbell is certain to fall victim to the halfway cut when the second round groupings complete play this afternoon.

Campbell did himself proud through the brutally tough opening six holes today, navigating the stretch with just a single bogey.

Yesterday he dropped seven shots over the same part of the course. Without that expensive run, Campbell would have made the cut and played the full weekend of the year's second Major championship.

He even got back to level par for the day with a birdie on the par four seventh, but dropped four strokes coming home on the back nine.
