Masterton amateur Ben Campbell has bowed out in round one of the British Amateur Championship at Royal Troon in Scotland.

The New Zealand No 2, who has finished runner-up twice in the Australian Amateur, was beaten at the 20th hole of a tight battle with American Tyler Raber.

Campbell is ranked 152 in the world and was the only Kiwi to progress to the match play stages of the event. He was beaten on extra holes by Raber who is ranked 836 in the world.

It was a disappointing result for the Kiwi contingent, who contested the British event to provide good international competition ahead of the Eisenhower world team championship in Turkey in October.
