Rolling in a 170-metre eagle with a rescue club, after chipping a wayward tee shot out of the trees, is a fair sign things are tracking well on the golf course.

So it proved for Wellington No 1 Julianne Alvarez at St Clair Golf Club yesterday when her five-under par round of 69 spearheaded the capital to a 4-1 win over Tasman at the women's interprovincial championship.

Alvarez was in sparkling form as she started birdie, par, eagle, birdie against Emily Stenhouse, before completing a 7 and 6 win on day two of the national teams event in Dunedin.

As on day one, Wellington's other guns fired too, with No 2 Te Rongopai Clay winning 7 and 5, No 4 Lucy Davis 6 and 4, and No 5 Alanah Braybrook 6 and 5.

Once again Barbara Parreno was the exception in terms of the win, losing 2 down, but manager Kellie Harrall said the No 3 was also playing good golf.

"A lot of other teams are stacking that No 3 spot, so Barbara is playing some top players. Yesterday she faced a former pro and if she'd been playing at No 2, ironically she'd have better results."

The afternoon win left Wellington unbeaten with three wins and narrowly ahead of North Harbour in division two after sitting out the morning action with a bye.

Wellington's main rivals Auckland continued to show form although it took a last-hole putt from No 2 Munchin Keh to secure a 3-2 win over Taranaki.

Auckland had earlier dismissed previously unbeaten Canterbury 4-1 and are leading division one with 11.5 of a possible 15 points.

Wellington play Bay of Plenty and North Harbour in rounds five and six in what shapes as a defining day.
