New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell is just one shot off the lead heading into the final two rounds of the $US2.5 million (NZ$3 million) Qatar Masters in Doha.

Campbell's fine start to 2013 continued at the Doha Golf Club this morning (NZ time) as he fired in another four-under par round of 68 to be eight-under through two rounds and in a five-way share of fifth.

He is one shot off the lead being held by four players - Spain's Sergio Garcia, Portugal's Ricardo Santos, Germany's Martin Kaymer and Australian Marcus Fraser - at nine-under. Garcia had the round of the day with a six-under 66.

Campbell was quick out of the blocks in the second round, with four birdies in his first eight holes. He turned in four-under 36 but had to settle for 10 successive pars to finish his blemish-free round.

The New Zealander tied for 17th in his first start of the year, at last week's Abu Dhabi Championship.

Meanwhile, Mike Hendry shares second spot after the opening round of the $A130,000 Heritage Classic in Victoria on the PGA Tour of Australasia yesterday.

Hendry, who finished second on the tour's 2012 order of merit, signed for a five-under par 67 to be among four players who are three shots off the leader, Australian David Bransdon, who had a course record eight-under 64.

Josh Geary and Gareth Paddison are the next best of the Kiwis, sharing eighth after three-under 69s at the Heritage Golf and Country Club.
