New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell has faded in the final round to finish in a six-way tie for 16th at the Qatar Masters in Doha.

After three straight four-under 68s, Campbell shot a fourth round two-over 74 to drop from a tie for second to outstide the top-10 at the Doha Golf Club.

Campbell, starting three strokes behind eventual winner, Englishman Chris Wood, started his round in the worst possible way, bogeying the first two holes, before a birdie at the third. He bogeyed the fifth hole to be two-over at the turn. A string of eight straight pars lead to bogeys at the 15th and 16th holes to be four-over for the round, before back-to-back birdies on the closing holes moved him back into the top-20.

The resurgent Kiwi ended eight strokes behind Wood, who eagled the final hole with a 12-foot putt on the final hole to win, and was tied for 16th with former or current European Ryder Cup players Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson.

Campbell earned 23,786 euros (NZ$38,230) for his efforts in Doha, sitting 45th in the European PGA Tour's "Race to Dubai".

The result is Campbell's second straight top-20 finish to start the 2013 European season, after finishing in a tie for 17th at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship last week. It also continues his fine form over the last four months that included a third placing at the Portugal Masters in October and a tie for eighth at the Hong Kong Open in November.
