Michael Campbell will have to go low tomorrow if he is to make his third consecutive cut in his strong start to the European Tour golf season.

The New Zealander is well off the pace after the opening round of the Dubai Desert Classic, having signed for a one over par 73, which included two bogeys and a lone birdie, to be in a share of 101st.

Scoring was generally hot at the Emirates Golf Club with 42 players shooting four-under 68s or better.

South African Richard Sterne holds a one-shot lead over Scotland's Stephen Gallacher after opening with 10 birdies and no bogeys in a 10-under 62.

Campbell had top-20 finishes in his first two events of the season, in Abu Dhabi and Qatar.
