Mastering the iron club was the key to success for 91-year-old Wanaka woman Glad Cross last week, after she potted her fifth hole in one.

Mrs Cross, who has been playing golf for 55 years, hit the lucky shot on hole 15, a 102 metre fairway, with a nine iron during Ladies Day.

"It was most unexpected because I had been playing terribly," Mrs Cross said.

Unfortunately the excitment of the shot put her off the rest of her game and she finished five down.

"My game didn't improve, it got worse," she said.

In her golfing career she has also hit three hole in ones in Balclutha and one in Gore.

However, the latest shot had been the most exciting because of how unexpected it was, she said.

Mastering the shot was down to being a good iron player, she said.

She also said using number four srixon balls gave her luck.

She plays golf twice a week as well as playing bowls twice a week.

Her next goal was to win her 24th bowls championship as she was in the finals for both the pairs and fours at the Wanaka Bowling Club.
