Steve Price has been dropped as Warriors captain with Simon Mannering taking over the skipper's role next year.
Price has a year to run on his contract at the Warriors and the club have seen it as timely to bring in some new blood at the top after the Australian had held the job for the past five seasons.
It's a further sign of sweeping changes at the club following this season's disappointing effort.
A new coaching and management structure has already been put in place.
Second rower Mannering - Napier-born and Nelson-raised - has been a workhorse for the side since debuting in 2005.
He is currently resting from a knee injury that kept him out of the Kiwi's Four Nations tour north.
He made 92 consecutive appearances before the knee injury hit late this season.
Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah said it was important Mannering had every chance to develop as a captain while 2005-2009 captain Price was still with the club.
"Steve has been a fantastic captain for the last five seasons and has done an outstanding job for the Vodafone Warriors in that role both on and off the field," said Scurrah.
"For us, this decision is about the future. Simon has the qualities to be a great captain and the time is right for him to take on that role now.
"We realise that when Steve does eventually retire as a player, a leader of his experience going will leave a huge void and, for that reason, we saw the need to appoint Simon while Steve was still playing for the club."
Although still only 23, Mannering has made rapid progress at both NRL and international level.
He played 19 consecutive tests since his debut in 2006, including the World Cup triumph in Australia last year.
He brought up the 100-game milestone in the NRL in the arriors' final match of the 2009 season against Melbourne.
Mannering said he was humbled when approached to become captain.
"It's such a huge honour to be asked to captain the Vodafone Warriors," he said.
"I'm committed to doing the best I possibly can for the club. I'm very proud to play for the Vodafone Warriors and to now be named to captain the side is an unbelievable privilege.
"I couldn't hope for a better person than Steve to learn from. I have so much respect for him and for what he has done for our club. I intend to learn as much as I can from him."
Warriors head coach Ivan Cleary said Mannering would prove a great choice as captain.
"In all areas his attitude is second to none. Simon also has the utmost respect from everyone at the club and has got the personal qualities required to be an excellent NRL captain," he said.
"Steve has done a terrific job for us as captain over the last five seasons but this is the right time for us to make a change while he is still very much a part of the action. He can be a real strength for Simon and the team.
"We all see Simon being captain of the Vodafone Warriors for years to come."
Mannering becomes the ninth player to be appointed captain since the club's arrival in 1995. After Dean Bell in the inaugural 1995 season, the other official captains have been Greg Alexander (1996), Matthew Ridge (1997-1999), John Simon (2000), co-captains Kevin Campion and Stacey Jones (2001), Monty Betham (2002-2004) and Price (2005-2009).

Clinton #33 are you crazy??? Simon mannering gives his all for 80 min, he has consistantly been in the top 3 players for our team for the last 5 years, yes luck would be a great captain and i dont think you can get a better captain that Price but Simon is a club man, hed give his all for the club, hes amoung the top back rowers in the game and is only 23, he very smart when it comes to the game Tackticly and emotionally. the warriors are jsut lucky they have 3 of the best choices to choose from, Also I think Luck has his head burried below too many tackles to have a clear idea of what is going on in the game where as Mannering is a link bettween the backs and forwards so will have a great insight into the tempo and balance of a game. Tuff choice though going through a year with a future captain when you have one of the best ever in the team.
Stuff is becoming more and more like a Woman's Day Magazine, sensationalist/misleading headlines are irritating.
Steven Price hasn't been "stripped" of his captaincy. This is a timely handover of the captaincy to a consistent performer & a player of future. Steven Fleming took over the captaincy @ 23 & we don't want to be forced into a rookie or non-"Warrior" captain in 2011
The Warriors are well known for shooting themselves in the foot and this is just another one of many.Steve Price if fit would be the first person you would put in your team. He inspires his fellow players by always knuckling down and doing the hard yards.Simon Mannering is a competent NRL second rower. This shows the coach and management are really struggling to find way to improve the fortunes of the Warriors.
Pricey has been a great captain but he is ageing. He was awol through injury for much of last year and won't be around after next season. Therefore, a great decision by the Warriors. Every club would want a player of Mannering's calibre on their roster so a no-brainer making him the captain.
Smart move grooming a captain while Priceys still around. People have commented about the fact Luck didn't get it, no disrespect to Lucky he's a key player but he is not a captain. To the people saying Mannering underpreforms and lacks passion, take a jump! You obviously don't watch Warriors games because Manners is the most consistent player in the team, and his work rate is second to none! He may not jump about and scream but he always puts his body on the line in D and is first to put his hand up to do the hard yards coming off his own line. He will be well assisted by the likes of Pricey, Lucky, Rapira, Wade, Tatey etc Good luck Manners
Ian, well if he has not been stripped, dumped, dropped, ejected - then what has he been? Get a grip. Price has been UNCEREMONIOUSLY DUMPED as captain. I won't be surprised if they pay out his contract half way thru the year too.
Good decision....Saw Mannering plays his 1st few games of league down in Nelson and have kept an eye on him since. Should be the face of New Zealand Rugby League. Congratulations to Paul Bergmen for identifying this talent playing schoolboy Rugby. Well done to simon Mannerring
Why drop Price as captain??? He was so good as it and they should have just made Simon co-captain wth. he can learn from price while hes still there and when he retires or leaves he can take over completely.
Once again the Warriors will implode. The main problem up there is they have idiots running the club. A change of coach would have made sense, but a change of captain another dumb mistake by the dumb administration. There' no way I would put any money on this lot to make the top 10 next year. Maybe they should look at signing some of the players from the Current National Champions, Canterbury instead of has been Aussies or drunks.

What a sad way to describe the Warriors releasing Pricey of the Captaincy what'sup with that STUFF?!?I agree with Deaker for once maybe a Vice Captaincy role under Price and let the Big Man go out a winner and not just another player shame on you WARRIORS...
