Former NZ Warriors and Kiwis prop Russell Packer has been charged with assault following an altercation in Sydney's CBD in which he allegedly fractured a man's eye socket.

Packer, who left the Warriors for the Newcastle Knights at the end of this NRL season, voluntarily turned up at a Newcastle police station today.

He had previously been interviewed by police in relation to an incident in Martin Place early on Saturday morning that left a 22-year-old man unconscious.

Packer, who has also also been charged with failing to leave a licensed premises, was granted bail today and is due to face court on January 6.

The NRL integrity unit is also investigating the incident, potentially placing the 24-year-old's career move in doubt.

Packer made 110 appearances for the Warriors but had a low-key final season at Mt Smart -- he only came to prominence when television camera caught him urinating on Suncorp Stadium before kick-off in a game against the Brisbane Broncos in June.

The charges against Packer follow Manly and Tonga prop Richie Fa'aoso fronting court in Sydney after allegedly smashing furniture, kicking a door off its hinges and breaking a window during a drunken domestic dispute last weekend.
