Former Warriors and current Panthers coach Ivan Cleary will help the Kiwis prepare for their Anzac Test after new Warriors head coach Andrew McFadden was forced to withdraw.

McFadden, who was this week named as acting head coach of the Warriors after Matt Elliott was shown the door, was to be an assistant to Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney for the May 2 test in Sydney.

However McFadden was forced to withdraw his services after his promotion.

Cleary will not be in camp with the Kiwis but will provide technical assistance to Kearney.

Cleary filled the assistant role at last year's World Cup, but had made himself unavailable this year to concentrate on his job with the Panthers.

New Zealand Rugby League high performance manager Tony Iro said it was disappointing to lose McFadden but there was little that could be done.

"We had included a clause in his contract that enabled him to take advantage of any head-coaching opportunities that might arise," Iro said.

"In effect, this leaves us with the same situation we had for last year's Anzac Test in Canberra and we'll revisit the assistant coach vacancy before the Four Nations in October.

"We are focused on getting the right person for our needs and feel this is the best solution in the meantime."
