Kiwi driver Scott Dixon couldn't break the pole position hoodoo at the Iowa 300 as he slipped to finish fourth in today's IndyCar race.

No pole-sitter has ever won at Iowa but Dixon, the top qualifier, was poised to break the drought late in the race.

Target Chip Ganassi team-mate Tony Kanaan led for most of the 300-lap race but with 54 laps to go Dixon swooped past him as he eyed a potentially series-saving win.

Kanaan fought back to take the lead with 10 laps remaining but both drivers fell away in the frantic final laps as race winner Ryan Hunter-Reay and second-placed Josef Newgarden surged past them.

Kanaan, who led for 247 of the 300 laps, finished third with Dixon, who led for 17 laps, fourth, which does little for his fading hopes of defending his championship title.

The Kiwi climbs one spot to eighth in the overall standings but is still 140 points behind new leader Helio Castroneves.

The Brazilian has a nine-point lead over former leader, Australian Will Power, who struggled to 14th place today. Hunter-Reay, the American, became the first three-time winner this season and moved into third in the standings after 12 of 18 races.
