New Zealand freestyle motocross rider Levi Sherwood picked the worst time for his worst result of the season.

After leading the Red Bull X-Fighters world tour for most of the year, Sherwood had to settle for second overall behind Australian Josh Sheehan after the final stop in Pretoria, South Africa.

Uncharacteristically, Sherwood posted just 56.2 points in qualifying to be 12th of 12 riders, then could manage just 62.6 points in the first round to miss out on the final place in the quarterfinals.

Sheehan, who trailed Sherwood by just five points going into the final stop, marched through the bracket to win X-Fighters' 50th event in front of a sold-out crowd of 22,000 at the Pretoria's historic Union Buildings. Sheehan finished on 360 points, to Sherwood's 270.
