Scott Dixon's disappointment at failing to win the Indianapolis 500 will ease when he checks his bank balance.

The New Zealand driver earned US$1.1 million (NZ$1.5 million) for finishing second yesterday in one of the biggest races on the motorsport calendar.

Dixon was pipped by his Target Chip Ganassi team-mate Dario Franchitti, who pocketed US$2.5 million from an overall race purse of US$13.3 million.

The US-based Dixon was all smiles as he embraced Franchitti soon after a drama-filled finish but later admitted to being "super gutted" at missing out on a second Indy500 career win.
