Holden's Jamie Whincup has reclaimed the V8 Supercar championship lead with victory in Saturday's 120km race at Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway.

Whincup climbed from fifth at the end of the opening lap to haul in title rivals Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom and claim his third victory of the season.

The 29-year-old was overtaken by Winterbottom and young New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen at the start of the race but worked his way to the front by the midway point and never looked back.

Davison, who snared pole position for the race, finished second while Winterbottom was third.

Whincup holds a two-point lead over Davison as their intriguing title battle continues.

The defending champion's teammate Craig Lowndes pulled off a miraculous drive, overcoming a starting position of 20th and being turned around early in the 42-lap race to finish fourth.

The Darwin event finishes on Sunday with qualifying before a 200km race in the afternoon.
