Timaru's Craig Gilbert has broken a land speed world record by a whisker in his 'Kiwified' Corvette but awaits a nervous fews days after a protest.

Gilbert clocked 230.4 miles per hour (370.79kph) on his return run on the salt flats at the Bonneville Speed Week in Utah, USA.

That meant his average speed over two runs broke the C-GT 6-litre record by 0.060mph (.01mph).Team mechanic Jody Wilson said they are under protest by the current record holder and it maybe two to three days before we get an answer.
