Kiwi motocross star Levi Sherwood has taken out the 2012 Red Bull X-Fighters Tour, the youngest ever rider to win the competition.

Sherwood, 20, won the final event in Sydney this evening, after facing off against Frenchman Thomas Pages.

The Palmerston North rider went into the final on Cockatoo Island deadlocked on points with Pages, although he claimed first place in qualifying yesterday.

Motocross website Fullnoise reported Sherwood's first run was the one that impressed judges most. He was awarded 87.40 points for his efforts against closest competitor Japan's Eigo Sato on 84.50.

Fullnoise wrote the course had proved challenging for riders who needed to use "every available second" to ensure their delivery of tricks was "both smooth and stylish."
