Kiwi motorsport ace Mitch Evans stormed to a podium finish in just his second race of the GP2 season in Malaysia today.

The 18-year-old Aucklander finished third in the sprint race at the Sepang circuit, in a race that was a curtain-raiser to the Formula One event.

Having finished 10th in his debut on Saturday to get amongst the points, Evans produced an even better effort in an improved car.

Over 22 laps, Evans was only bettered by race winner Stefano Coletti and second placed Felipe Nasr.

"Whoohoo, I can't believe it," Evans said of his stunning weekend in Malaysia.

"It was a huge improvement from yesterday. Unbelievable."

"I just had my head down all during the race, but I kept telling myself 'get to the end, get to the end'."

Evans, the GP3 champion stepping up a division with Arden International, had also been dogged by his recovery from food poisoning on Saturday.

But he showed his true potential in the sprint.

He was 8.35s down on Coletti but clear enough of the rest of the field to ensure he got on the podium after pole-sitter Stephane Richelmi gifted him third by out-braking himself at the final corner on lap 17.

"I'd saved my tyres to have a crack at him. I could see he was struggling and then he made a little mistake and I was throught.

"The car was a lot better than it was in the Saturday race, my Arden team did a great job. I got an awesome start, almost got take out by Calado but came through to pas Richelmi. Happy days," Evans beamed

The 10 points plus the one earned on Saturday, lifted Evans to sixth overall.
