New Zealand-born Australian netball veteran Catherine Cox has been rested from a pre-trans-Tasman league tournament here at the weekend as the Sydney Swifts continue to nurse the shooter back from foot surgery.

The 33-year-old has been left out of the Swifts squad for the three-day Sydney Olympic Park (SOP) Cup which features New Zealand franchises the Southern Steel and Central Pulse.

Cox, who has racked up more than 70 international caps, has been rested by the Swifts medical staff, though the team captain is expected to be fit for the ANZ championship opening round on March 20.

She has been replaced by New South Wales under-19 player Nicola Gray.

The SOP Cup starts at the Sydney Olympic Park venue on Friday and continues until Sunday. The New Zealand teams play each other in the first round before facing each of the Australian franchises - the Swifts, Queensland Firebirds, Adelaide Thunderbirds, West Coast Fever and Melbourne Vixens.

The games will be condensed to four 10-minute quarters.
