Fatigued Diamonds keeper Laura Geitz has received the ultimate pick-me-up after being named Queensland Firebirds captain ahead of the 2013 trans-Tasman netball season.
Geitz missed the recent quad series for Australia but has been rejuvenated after being handed the Firebirds' reins following the retirement of Lauren Nourse at the end of the 2012 season.
"Being handed the captaincy is a huge honour and privilege," she said.
"Winning the championship in 2011 was a major achievement and I'm determined to repeat that success with our current crop of extremely-talented players."
The Firebirds' reigning Player of the Year Natalie Medhurst has been named vice-captain after enjoying a leadership group role last season.
Geitz will lead a new-look Firebirds' outfit featuring protege Laura Clemesha, an emerging defender who was Queensland Under 21's most valuable player this year.
Queensland have retained goaler Romelda Aiken as well as mid-courter Chelsea Pitman.
But centre Elissa Macleod and defender Amy Steele have returned to Melbourne.
The Firebirds begin their pre-season in January ahead of their tournament opener against the Southern Steel on March 24 in Brisbane.
Jamaican international Aiken is expected to be fully fit for the pre-season despite being booked for more surgery on her broken hand in Brisbane on Wednesday.
Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke said Aiken went under the knife again after recent scans showed the damaged bone had not healed properly.
Aiken broke her right hand playing for Jamaica in a practice game in October.
"It's frustrating for both Romelda and the team, however she will return to full contact training with the rest of the squad early in 2013," said Jencke.
