Kiwi athletes get surprise visit from the Queen
The Queen dropped in on several surprised Kiwi athletes at the Olympic Games village earlier today.
Her Majesty was taken through the food hall and among the athletes they visited were New Zealand boxer Alexis Pritchard, weightlifter Richie Patterson and flagbearer and 1500m runner Nick Willis.
An excited Willis posted on Twitter: "As the queen shook my hand, a table full of athletes trying to get a view, came crashing down. She didnt even flinch!"
Ubiquitous Kiwi chef de mission Dave Currie crashed the party and said after the visit: "She certainly spent more time with the New Zealand athletes than the others.
"Princess Anne, an Olympian herself, was there too, much more casual and even helped herself to a tray of food in the athletes dining hall."
The Queen's appearances today were greeted heartily by athletes, who cheered loudly when she appeared at the swimming and she was also farewelled with applause from the village.
