Alicia Coutts may have five Olympic medals around her neck, but the Australian swimmer has already set herself a new challenge: breaking a world record.

The 23-year-old's impressive medal haul from the London Games made her one of just three Australians who have achieved such a feat at a single Games, alongside pool legends Ian Thorpe and Shane Gould.

Coutts won team gold in the women's 4x100 freestyle relay, a silver in each of the 200m individual medley, 4x200m and 4x100m medley relays, and a bronze in the 100m butterfly.

Despite having had a week off since her last event, she said she's yet to digest the significance of her achievements.

"I hadn't really thought about it and, you know, I never came in with a goal of doing that," Coutts said in Sydney shortly after getting off a plane from London.

"It's pretty exciting to know but I guess it hasn't really sunk in.

"I think the only box that's not ticked now is a world record, so maybe that's next on my list."

Whether Rio de Janeiro will be where she wants to set that record is still up in the air, with Coutts undecided about pushing on for another Olympic campaign.

"I haven't really thought about that," she said.

"As long as I keep swimming well, I'll probably keep going. We'll just see what happens."

Coutts will head to Bali next week for a holiday with her boyfriend before returning to the pool for training at the start of October.
