Five Indian athletes have tested positive for use of a stimulant, hitting the host nation's medal chances at next month's Commonwealth Games.

Four wrestlers and shot putter were suspended Thursday after failing tests conducted by India's National Anti Doping Agency.

They included Olympian Rajiv Tomar, who had been considered a gold medal prospect in the men's 120-kilogram freestyle wrestling.

The others wrestlers to test positive were men's competitors Mausam Khatri and Sumit Kumar and female wrestler Gursharanpreet Kaur.

Saurabh Vij, a medal prospect in men's shot put, also tested positive.

All five tested positive for methylhexanamine, a widely available stimulant.

The athletes had been withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games, but the length of their suspensions was yet to be determined, with bans of up to two years possible.

They can request a sample 'B' test, but there will not be enough time to complete that before the Commonwealth Games.

Another three athletes tested positive, but were not in India's squad for the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in New Delhi from October 3 to 14.
