Jarryd Hayne was mistakenly labelled a New Zealander by the San Francisco 49ers' official Twitter feed.

Australian star Jarryd Hayne had a pretty good day on Monday, playing a brilliant game for his new  American football team the San Francisco 49ers.

So good, in fact - with two punt returns in the first quarter - that the 49er's social media team decided to send a shoutout to Australia. Fair enough. Emoji away.

There was just one problem: they posted our flag in their tweet.

Now, is this mistake somewhat understandable? Yes. Foreigners have a fair bit of trouble distinguishing between Australia's mostly blue Union Jack and stars design and OUR mostly blue Union Jack and stars design, especially when working at emoji-size.

Of course, that didn't hold back the righteous ire of a fair few Australians. After all, the 49ers have just under a million followers. Luckily for the downtrodden Aussies, unused to a confusion Kiwi expats face every day, the tweet was soon replaced with a proper Australian flag one.

Note: That's the Twitter app showing the flag as 'N Z'. On the emoji keyboard it would show as the flag.
