The New Zealand baseball team have landed San Francisco Giants minor league coach Andy Skeels as their manager for the World Baseball Classic qualifying tournament and he's likely to bring some major assistants with him.
Paraparaumu-born Skeels has spent most of his life in the United States, carving out a successful baseball career in the minor leagues both as a player and coach.
Skeels, who played minor league baseball himself for the San Diego Padres and New York Yankees, manages the San Francisco Giants single-A advanced affiliate team, the San Jose Giants.
The side made the California League Championship playoff series earlier this month, but lost in their first round match-up.
Skeels' aim is to have a current major league player and a former All Star as part of his coaching staff.
New Zealand plays Thailand, the Philippines and hosts Taiwan in the November qualifying tournament with the winner advancing to March's World Baseball Classic finals.
