Olympic sailing silver medallists Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have confirmed they will remain in the 49er skiff class and campaign for the Rio Olympics in 2016.

The pair have been mulling their future since claiming silver in the 49er in the Olympic regatta off Weymouth in August, New Zealand's 100th Olympic medal.

Burling, from Tauranga, has since skippered Team Korea in the AC45 America's Cup world series in San Francisco while Northlander Tuke is planning to sail for New Zealand boat Rikki in the upcoming Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

They've expressed a desire to keep exploring other options next year but are committed to another Olympic campaign in the 49er and will ramp up preparations from 2014, while still keeping their eye in next year.

The young pair are expected to race the 49er in Sail Auckland in early February, their first regatta of the new campaign, as they seek to close the gap on Australians Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, the 2012 gold medallists who have also committed to another Olympic campaign in the 49er.

Opinion poll

Will Shane Cameron beat Kali Meehan on Saturday?

For sure. Cameron will knock him out.

It will be close but I think Cameron on points.

Meehan will knock him out. This is his last fight.

I'm tipping Meehan to win on points.
