The Coastguard came to the rescue of a person on board the Team Vodafone Sailing boat yesterday after she suffered a suspected broken arm while training on the Hauraki Gulf.

Members of the North Shore coastguard reached the trimaran, located almost 3km off the North Shore coastline, about 4.51pm before taking the woman - on a Christmas outing - to an ambulance at Browns Bay beach.

Team Vodafone Sailing's vessel is one of the fastest in the world and can travel at speeds of more than 40 knots (74kmh).

The incident came just an hour after the Coastguard was called to a boat in distress off Kawakawa Bay, southeast Auckland.

Another boatie alerted rescue crews after securing the stricken vessel under tow.

A man in his 60s, one of two crew members on the boat, was unconscious when the Maraetai Rescue One team arrived at around 3.40pm.

According to a Coastguard spokesman the man was confused and had difficulty breathing once he regained consciousness shortly after they arrived.

Rescuers transported the man to an ambulance waiting at the Kawakawa Bay boat ramp.

Coastguard duty officer Mark Leevers said the two incidents highlighted the importance of carrying two forms of waterproof communication when out on the water.

"It can happen to anyone and if we can't hear you, we can't help you."
