Natalie Rooney was off target at her first major competition of the year.

New Zealand trap shooter Natalie Rooney missed a spot in the finals at the ISSF World Cup in India.

The 28-year-old failed to fire at her first major competition of 2017 in New Delhi.

The Rio Olympic silver medallist was 21st in a field of 29 trap shooters.

It was Rooney's first big event since being crowned overall World Cup champion, following a dramatic finale in Rome last October.

Her radar wasn't on target, scoring only 61 points out of a possible 75 in qualifying, to miss a place in the top-six final by five shots.

Australian 21-year-old Penny Smith won her first World Cup title, heading off London Olympic champion Jessica Rossi of Italy.

At Rio Rooney became New Zealand's first Olympic shooting medallist in 48 years.
