Joseph Parker sweating on late arrival of new $10,000 boxing trunks and gown
Joseph Parker is sweating on the late arrival of his new fight night uniform, valued at around $10,000.
After winning his WBO heavyweight title last December, Parker decided to get trunks and a gown to match his world champion status, especially for the first defence of the coveted belt.
Parker's assistant trainer Taylor Barry got in touch with Britain's Sophie Whittam, who owns Fight Label and is a designer for the biggest names in boxing. She has provided the uniforms for Floyd Mayweather, Amir Khan and Anthony Joshua among others.
The stunning white outfit Joshua wore when beating Wladimir Klitschko on Sunday was her latest work. Joshua's trunks featured perforated nappa leather with luxury white cobra and metallic gold crocodile trim.
Parker's uniform, which includes crystals, suede and python skin, is now awaiting clearance by New Zealand customs officials.
"We missed out on it getting shipped to Vegas and we got it shipped to New Zealand. They want confirmation of its value," Barry said.
He was hopeful the uniform would be cleared by Thursday.
Parker fights Razvan Conaju in Auckland on Saturday night with the big Romanian a late replacement for Britain's Hughie Fury, who pulled out with a back injury.
Barry felt the new trunks and gown were an appropriate step up for Parker and their value dwarfed his previous uniform costs.
"It was time to do things more professionally. I reached out to Sophie and she was keen to work with us," Barry said.
"We sorted out the look Joe wanted and from the photos we've seen it has come up really well."
Parker changes his trunks and gown for each fight. He has had a wide variety of colours and styles during his five-year professional career with black, white, purple, yellow and red some of his options.
Barry said they didn't have a back-up uniform for Parker, other than some he had worn from fights in 2013 and 2014.
"I hope we don't have to pull one of those out. I'm pretty sure we will get this issue resolved."
Parker's cornermen will also have new uniforms designed by Whittam.
Like Joshua, the Kiwi heavyweight is sponsored by Under Armour for his sporting apparel.
