Valerie Adams to compete at Christchurch meet
Valerie Adams has confirmed she will throw at Christchurch's International Track Meet this month.
The double Olympic gold medallist and four-time world champion shot putter will headline the February 22 event at Christ's College.
Adams, 29, said she was looking forward to returning to the event and using the ITM to return to throwing after surgery on her knee and ankle.
She will be up against many of New Zealand's best young throwers - male and female - and Australian competitors.
The event will also pit the New Zealand men's and women's record holders against each other with Christchurch's Tom Walsh going up against Adams.
"I'm delighted to be able to be competing again in Christchurch," she said.
"I love the ITM and everything it brings - the crowd, atmosphere, just everything. It's a great way for me to kick off 2014, especially after recovering from my surgery."
Walsh, who trained with Adams in Switzerland last year prior to breaking the New Zealand record in Australia in December, was also excited.
"She's a superstar, it will be great to have her competing here in Christchurch again" he said today.
The throws fields were further boosted today by the announcement that Australian Dani Samuels, a former world discus champion who competed against Beatrice Faumuina at the ITM in 2010, would be returning alongside two promising young compatriots, Christie Chamberlain and Alix Kennedy.
A Walsh-Jacko Gill clash still remains up in the air as the meet organisers are still yet to hear back from the Aucklander who was last week reported as saying he'd likely not be back until March.
