Addington Raceway officials today confirmed a metal pen, not a knife, was thrown on to the racetrack during the final stages of last week's New Zealand Trotting Cup.
The person who threw the pen had come forward and apologised to New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club (NZMTC) and Harness Racing New Zealand officials, saying the incident was an accident and a practical joke gone horribly wrong, the NZMTC said.
It was earlier reported that a knife had been thrown.
Once racecourse inspector Barry Kitto's inquiry into the incident is completed, a decision will be made as to whether any further action was needed, the club said.
