Red Ruler has won the $250,000 Wellington Cup at Trentham today.

Jockey Mark Du Plessis brought the favourite through the middle from behind in the home straight to take the win from Man on a Mission and Awesome Planet, who tied for second.

Sargent Stable spokesman Hayden Allen said after the race Du Plessis had pulled off "another great ride".

"He obviously knew what he was doing and it all come off," he told Trackside.

"It was a truly run race so he give him a breather halfway through."

Red Ruler's stablemate, Heza Karma Karzi, won the previous race ridden by Du Plessis.

The win was Red Ruler's seventh from 28 starts and takes his winnings to nearly $1.3 million.

He paid $3.20 for the win and $1.80 for a place.
