RICH SUCCESS: Jockey Robby Albarado has teamed with Curlin for much of the horse's success in becoming the highest ever money-earning North American horse of all time.

Curlin has become the first North American horse to top $US10 million ($NZ14.28m) in career earnings by winning the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Sunday.

Jockey Robby Albarado guided Curlin to a three-quarter-length victory over Wanderin Boy, the 11th win in 15 starts for the four-year-old colt.

"I'm sure it is not going to hit me for a while," Albarado told reporters. "I'm sure this record will be broken one day, but it will take a hell of a horse. I had a great trip.

"The bar is set against him every time, but he exceeds our expectations every time he runs."

The triumph, over a sloppy track, was worth $450,000 and hiked Curlin's career earnings to $10,246,800, surpassing the previous mark of $9,999,815 by Cigar.

Curlin won the mile-and-a-quarter race over the dirt in 2:01.93, drawing away from Wanderin Boy in the stretch of the eight-horse affair.
