North Island hoop Lisa Allpress made another successful trip to the South Island yesterday with a treble of winners at Timaru.
New Zealand's leading female jockey, Allpress has made every trip south this season a successful one and yesterday was no different.
She picked up wins with Smart Halo, Numero De Lago and Braemar, continuing her charge toward Matthew Cameron in the national jockeys' premiership.
Both Numero De Lago and Braemar come out of Michael Daly's stable. He trains just down the road from the Phar Lap track and rarely does a meeting go by there where he doesn't pick up a winner.
Allpress' three wins took her to 128 wins for the season, but Cameron added to his tally with a brace of wins to move to 136, creating what will be an interesting last six weeks of the season.
Like Allpress, harness driver Ricky May was in fine form yesterday.
He also picked up three winners on the day at the Blenheim meeting.
May, who snared six winners at the two-day Nelson meeting last week, wasted no time getting back on to the winners' list yesterday, proving successful in the first race behind the Murray Tapper-trained Sophistication at odds of 18-1.
He backed that up with under-rated pacer Rehab, who snuck along the markers to win for trainer Jan Williams at 20-1.
An impressive winner at Nelson earlier in the year, Rehab had failed to flatter in two starts back this campaign but bounced back to his best yesterday.
May settled Bettor's Delight three back on the markers and the gelding did the rest, sprinting up the straight in impressive fashion to win by a head from a brave Swing Away.
The Methven horseman waited until the last of the day to claim his third success but produced a perfect drive on the Wayne Higgs-trained Jackaroo Bromac to claim victory in the shadows of the post.
The two-day meeting at Blenheim continues tomorrow when the second day of harness action gets under way.
