All Blacks living legend Sean Fitzpatrick has launched a withering attack on New Zealand rugby saying the game in the southern hemisphere is too loose and is detrimental to the All Blacks' future success.

In a radio interview with Sunday Star-Times columnist Phil Gifford, Fitzpatrick, our most capped All Black with 92 tests, said he'd rather watch an English Premiership or Heineken Cup game than Super rugby.

"In terms of what I am seeing in Super 14 compared to the Premiership and Heineken Cup, it is quite clear one game is better than the other.

"What's happening in Super 14 is lacking structure. The teams that are doing well the Bulls and Chiefs are the teams that are playing with structure. Unfortunately with the short-arm penalty, it encourages teams and players ... to cheat."

His comments will come as another body blow for the game here, which is under siege.

Fans struggle to understand its rules, are turning off in droves and not attending games.

Fitzpatrick said he wasn't surprised and had a pop at the country's obsession with free-flowing play, which he reckons would eventually undermine the All Blacks' supremacy.

The Chiefs v Blues game on March 21 "was probably the worst and most disappointing game of rugby I have seen. If you think that is great, free-flowing rugby to watch, we are obviously watching two different games. That's not what I see as a great game.

"[The northern and southern hemisphere] need to get our heads together and decide what we want to watch. I am sure there is a compromise or middle road because 63-32 is not rugby we should be encouraging our younger players to play, because once we get to All Black rugby it doesn't wash."

Fitzpatrick also slammed the ELVs, saying: "The ELVs and some coaches are encouraging our younger guys to play this helter skelter rugby which is fantastic at schoolboy and club level but against the big boys in international rugby it won't wash."

Two things only NZ teams can play free flowing rugby thats takes just to much skill for NH teams to get there heads around. We've go Locks with better ball skills then some of there play makers. But Fitzy right in the Test Arena / world cup final Basketball rugby will not cut it against teams like the Springbok NO CHANCE!. So whats the answer? Who knows? But we do know who plays the beautiful game alah Brazil for football and that's the AB's ............sorry Fitzy thats a fact mate!

Anyone that watched the Highlanders play the Bulls will know that Super 14 is in great condition, it's a tight tournament, heaps of awesome flowing rugby to watch, a great contest in all aspects.

People like Fitzy stir controversy because it's what they're paid to do. He is one of the most money hungry ex-AB's ever, he wanted to jump in with the rebel league as soon as they flashed a cheque in front of his face in '95 and now he's playing an angle on behalf of the pommie media.

Didnt the AB's hammer the home nations at the end of last season. Yeah i thought so.

The Blues vs Chiefs game was hardly structured.

The Chiefs tries have been very good, but a lot of them have come from poor defence from the Blues and Reds. Until the Chiefs started playing with a bit of structure vs the Lions they had been playing the exact same way they had played vs the Blues and Reds. No doubt their front row has picked up their game a bit but the Lions showed where the Chiefs are lacking. The Chiefs haven't been playing with great structure on attack, they've just got some of the best finishers in the game, and they are completely lacking in defensive structure.

Fitzy may well be right, BUT he and many since have all disappeared over seas and have left a gaping hole in the NZ system He and others like him should be back in NZ and getting involved again at adifferent level, wether it be coasching , administrating local unions etc or just playing club rugby.

otherwise shut up.

If you go O/S , that's fine, but don't sit in your flash house on the Thames and ridicule what you are no longer part of

Look at the Stats, the reason the Chiefs are doing well is because their tight five has fronted up. Donald is actually kicking the ball a fair bit - getting them into good positions. Before the Lions game they were definately playing with structure.

In the first half against the Lions, they tried to play touch, just throwing the ball all over, and they got nowhere. In the second half, they reverted back to a structured approach and they ended up with a win. It's no coincidence.
