The All Blacks are returning to their traditional white alternate jersey, ditching the silver-grey look they wore in their 2007 World Cup disaster.

The All Blacks are returning to their traditional white alternate jersey, ditching the silver-grey look they wore in their 2007 World Cup disaster.

The new All Blacks playing strips were unveiled in Auckland this morning along with a new Silver Ferns dress as netball rejoined the adidas stable.

The All Blacks alternate jersey is plain white and will be worn with black shorts and black socks.

It will be worn for the first time in November when the All Blacks play France in a test in Marseille.

The French controversially darkened their Nike strip to a very deep blue on the eve of the last World Cup, meaning a clash with the All Blacks' playing strip.

When it came time to decide who would have to wear the alternate jerseys in the tournament, the French struck a psychological blow by retaining their usual strip and forcing the All Blacks to play in the silver-grey strip.

The result was the All Blacks' worst World Cup effort as they crashed out in the quarterfinals for the first time.

The last World Cup also featured the All Blacks wearing their alternative silver-grey strip against Scotland. But it was so close to the new-look Scottish blue-grey outfit that the players were hard to tell apart.

That has been consigned to history now with the returning white jersey including a white collar and New Zealand's national symbol, the silver fern, on the left breast in black.

As well, for the first time ever, both the black and white strips will feature a subtle fern pattern across the front of the jersey fabric, enhancing the New Zealand look and feel of the most famous rugby jersey in the world.

Unlike all of their international opponents the All Blacks jerseys remains sponsor-free apart from the small adidas manufacturer's logo on the right breast.

All Blacks Ali Williams, Joe Rokocoko, Tony Woodcock and Keven Mealamu modelled the new playing strips while Silver Ferns Irene Van Dyk, Casey Williams, Laura Langman and Maria Tutaia showed off the netball dresses.

Ad Feedback

Mealamu, the All Blacks hooker, feels the return to white is a good move.

"I think it's going traditional again. The jerseys are comfortable with their fitting and the changes are quite subtle."

Mealamu, who was injured out of the World Cup quarterfinal loss, had the agony of watching from the stands in Cardiff as the men in silver capitulated.

"There's one game that stands out for me," he said of that controversial alternate strip.

"So I'm happy to see it go back to white. But we've lost a couple of games in the black jersey as well."

In a statement, All Blacks captain Richie McCaw welcomed the new design for the second kit saying, "The team is really excited about the new white jersey. Although we always love playing in the black All Blacks jersey, it's a rare honour and privilege to play in the second kit. I know the boys are looking forward to having the opportunity to pull one on, and I am sure the fans will be just as excited about seeing us play in it."

The All Blacks, as the home side, will be able to wear their traditional black jerseys in the two tests against France in June. They also play Italy.

Sporting manufacturer adidas are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year and 2009 marks a 10 year association with the All Blacks under their current deal. That has been extended through to 2019.

The 2009 all-white jersey also continues the tradition of famous white All Blacks jerseys of the past, with the All Blacks first donning an all-white jersey in 1930 for the domestic Test series against the touring British Isles team.

The new adidas rugby jerseys will be the lightest ever, weighing just 195 grams, making them 35 percent lighter than the 2005 edition

The black netball dress is a merino-polyester mix and also features a stylised fern through it along with the New World sponsor's logo across the chest. The player positions and markings are in silver.

Silver Fern captain Julie Seymour says the team are thrilled with their new look.

"We're really looking forward to stepping onto the court in September in our new match dress. The technology of the dress is fantastic - the fabric is so comfortable, which is so important for competition play," she said.

What do you think of the new playing strips?

Don't be so silly GM. Yes, it used to be the home team but the IRB have for some reason changed this to be the away team.

However, France did not "refuse" to change. An RWC match is always considered neutral. There was a coin toss which the NZ manager got to call and he lost it. Pure and simple.

Save your conspiracy theories for Elvis and gunmen on grassy knolls.

Didn't it used to be that if the rugby jerseys of two nations was close enough to get mixed up, then the home team would wear an alternate strip? As we all know France refused to do so in the semis of the last RWC which meant the AB's had to wear their heinous greyman strip at the last RWC. I just hope the AB's do NOT give France the psychological boost by wearing their alternate strip. I mean that would be just TOO much, what with France fielding a second string team as well. And get rid of the ridiculous home and away strip in the S14. The rugby jerseys are different enough already. It's not as if any teams were going to get mixed up on the field.

You guys blaming the 1/4 final on the jersey - you do remember we wore the alternate strip when we won it in 1987? and we wore it in the 1/4 final v Scotland. However, that grey/black rag was an horrendous excuse for a rugby jersey. adidas are German, Germans are good at precision engineering and black uniforms. Let them get back to making jerseys properly and only having to decide between black or white. Leave the "fashion" designs to those at Nike and their ridiculous slash on the Pom and Frog jerseys.

its a relief that they got rid of that silver n black strip from the world cup..its not because they lost but because it looked awful.......plus when they played against scotland u cud hardly tel the teams apart....luckly technolgy has givn us wide screen.......

Did sponsors pay McCaw to talk so much dribble about an alternative coloured jersey to make it easier for officials to distinguish team members?I will be excited seeing the ABs playing in the white strip or any other colour, when they stop strutting and start getting down to playing good, creative memorable rugby. That`s what the fans want isn`t it,or am I in fairy land? It`s not the weight of the jersey that counts-it`s the weight of the 2inches between the brow and the top of the head!!!

Gee , thats all you here these days is "we could have , should have and why didnt we win" , I now lets blame the colour of the jumpers instead of the refs or how about the altitiude or the wind or the sun, lets just admit it the ALL BLACKS CHOKED under all the pressure, and move on to the next world cup. I really dont think changing the colour of the jumper does anything but confuse viewers , scotland and france are just grasping at straws thinking that putting the All Blacks into a different coloured strip wil stop them from getting their butts kicked , really lets just upset everyone and make the new All Black strip RED with a Black Cross on the front and splash of Yellow across the back (I know about 50% of Kiwis world wide would be happy with that combination), and we all know that the only reason that the All Blacks lost the game aginst the French had nothing to do with the fact that the ref was a pom an dyou ever won that game would play England or Australia (There I whinged)

I know the English and Scottish can clash heads at times... But I'm glad to say that I like totally agree with you! The English Team look absolutely fab in their home kit... But the AB's in White? Like wow! Hottnesss! What about the likes of Liam Messam, Sitivent Sivivatu and Joe Rocokoco in white??? Hubba hubba! End of year tour... Here I come!

Katipo   #41   03:09 pm May 05 2009

Good one. Now can we have traditional hooped jerseys for the super teams?

Sasquatch   #40   09:46 am May 05 2009

Oh I see, excuse number 1001 why they had a poor showing in 2007. It was the jerseys they were wearing.. I hope they concentrate on the job at hand this time rather than how they look and stop making excuses, if they do they'll be champions.

Brilliant, back to white as a second strip. Please consign the grey to the history books forever... Now for all the grey S14 strips...
