Tickets to Wellington's rugby sevens tournament in February were snapped up within three minutes this morning - setting a new speed record for sales.

Tickets went on sale at 9am via the Ticketmaster website.

The two-day party for the 2010 NZI Sevens will take place on February 5 and 6.

The iconic Wellington event has sold out every year for the past eight years and ticket prices ranged from $45 for a child seat in the family zone to $170 for the platinum and silver covered section.

Tickets for Wellington's biggest party, which draws a capacity 35,000 fans to the two-day tournament, were sold out within five minutes last year.

What makes me laugh is that I've been to the rugby a few times in Wellington and the stadium is barely half full. Where are all you 'desperate' fans week in week out?

Sure, the Sevens is a big deal but maybe there needs to be a loyalty scheme in place (perhaps there already is?) that if you support your teams through the year you get a kick back on priority for the big games.

I was on the ticketmaster website nice and early and ready I keep on trying from 9am to 9:10 am I was gutted to find out that the tickets sold out in three minutes. There should be a limted on the number of tickets per person like four tickets person which would make thinghs fair which would be nice. When I checked on trademe to have a look I thought that was being gready and the police and the goverment should get tough on sclaping tickets

#55, I hope like hell no one buys your tickets and you are left out of pocket. Not that that is likely to happen, but you are a complete .... for making people pay extra for tickets you don't even need.

To all would be Trade Me purchasers, the only way to stop people like this loser is to stop buying tickets off them. boycott Trade Me tickets!

bugger, missed out!

sez   #68   05:09 pm Sep 29 2009

missed out and not for lack of trying!

Sure it sucks there are in reality only a few actually available to the wider market, but what sucks more is that people have them on TradeMe in a matter of minutes. I know it is an auction so user driven price, but it is not like they are making money from them by accident or have a few spare they want to flick of, it is deliberate.

Buggar! - I was on early and ready to go at 9am - straight through and still no luck...unless I wanted Child's tickets (in which case I spose I could have dressed up as a kid)...nevermind will have to play the game and try and get 2 from a Company or Scalper that has abused their privilege once again :(

Seems bad that the public get so few tickets yet these travel companies etc get so many, so much for looking after the NZ public.

Yeeha! I have tickets, but only coz I am a season ticket holder at the Stadium. I attend all the NPC and Super 14 games and the sevens are the icing on the cake. I am surprised though thqat only 3000 tickets are available for general sale - there aint that many season ticket holders. The NZRU must be making a killing pre-selling to the corporates.

Has rugby had a fair deal at the Halberg Awards over the years?

No. They should have won more gongs than they have.

It's been about right.

More than a fair deal. Other sports are more deserving.
