New Zealand rugby player Dion Berryman has been suspended from the Italian club scene after testing positive for a banned substance.

The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) announced the decision today, saying Berryman, who plays fullback for top Tuscany side Cavalieri Prato, couldn't play until the analysis and publication of further tests.

"CONI announces a positive case following examinations carried out by the Rome laboratory," CONI said in a statement.

"An A sample taken from Dion Berryman on November 4 after the Cavalieri Prato v Calvisano game was found to contain 4-methyl-2-Esanamina.

"The disciplinary commission of the National Anti-Doping Tribunal has provisionally suspended the athlete."

The 26-year-old moved to Italy last year after developing his career in Australia.

He started out with the Hautapu club in Cambridge and made the Waikato Colts.

He moved to Perth in 2006 and played for the Western Force academy, getting a place in their Super Rugby squad in 2009.

Berryman then shifted to Sydney to play for the Gordon club and played in the City v Country match last year.

He then secured a deal in Italy.
