New Zealand's sevens stars dominated the individual awards as their teams soaked up the glory of winning both the men's and women's titles at the World Cup in Moscow.

Tim Mikkelson was named sevens player of the year by the International Rugby Board.

Kayla McAlister, sister of All Black Luke McAlister, gained that honour in the women's ranks.

Young New Zealand playmaker Gillies Kaka was named the men's player of the World Cup and try-scoring machine Portia Woodman took the women's award at the tournament for her 12 touchdowns.

The New Zealand women set the tone for finals day when they beat Canada 29-12 in their title match.

The men were next up for the tournament's finale and responded by thumping England 33-0.

It was the women's first World Cup success after finishing runner-up four years ago.

The New Zealand men finally won their second title after their last success 12 years ago.

The New Zealand men's and women's teams also won this year's world series crowns.
